Weekly Progress Update #1
Okay, let’s keep this party rolling.
(There’s something there about a D&D party rolling dice, but alas, let’s stay on track.)
I’ve been struggling a lot with writing this because it’s been a minute since I didn’t write about a specific topic. It’s much easier for me to take something that’s on my mind and apply it to bootcamps or business than to just express what’s on my mind.
So to begin with, this newsletter will be a series of weekly check-ins.
What’s happening in my life. What tools or techniques I’m using. What’s working. What’s not.
Plus, Minus, Next
I recently listened to Tiny Experiments by Anne-Laure Le Cunff (actually I have like 15-minutes left – for some reason I have trouble listening to the last part of the book).
The book is a McDonalds menu of really practical tools and tactics to overcome the various ailments of knowledge workers.
A couple of things I’ve found myself using are self-anthropology and plus, minus, next. The first has been really interesting (especially when you put your notes through AI and ask for patterns) and the latter is what I’m going to do with you now as I forgot to do it on Sunday.
Plus = what worked. Minus = what didn’t. Next = what’s next?
Plus
Spent time each day working through money stuff with It’s Not Your Money
Looked at the books on my wishlist and found podcasts interviews with authors to help decide if I actually want to read the book
Hit my workout goals
Set a date for the next round of Group Flow
Came up with a coaching program format I can test out
Minus
Had a bit of trouble maintaining my meditation streak – often forgot about it until bed time
Low income week
A few social events led to a little too much alcohol
Late night Tuesday night (unavoidable – somewhat)
Next
This week I open enrollment for the 2nd intake of Group Flow
In regards to my podcast, less frequency, more depth
Mum arrives in town
First week with less daycare days
What are you world-class at?
At the beginning of the year I joined one of Barrett Brooks group coaching… er… groups.
I know Barrett from way back when I lived in Portland, OR for a year and we’ve kept in touch on and off over the years. I liked the stuff he was sharing around business and being an online creator. I’ve also always felt like he’s someone who really see’s me, understands my motives for being an online business owner, and doesn’t judge or poo-poo them.
One of the questions Barrett often asks on his podcast is ‘What are you world-class at?’ and it’s one I’ve been pondering a lot lately.
My attitude is usually to just be good enough at something. I’ll do just enough research or get just enough practice and then kind of rely on my natural talents to carry me through.
So the idea of dedicating myself to one thing enough to become one of the ‘go-to’ people for that feels strange. But strange in a way that it’s probably worth exploring.
So far I’ve worked out that I don’t want to be the best at ‘doing’ something. I’d rather be the best at ‘being’ something (which fits in with me being a Projector).
So rather than being a world-class widget maker, perhaps I’m a world-class listener. Or world-class at holding space for people. Neither of those feels right, but it feels more on track to finding something that I feel like I could sink into.

And that’s me for another week.
I hope you’re enjoying following along. And if not. Well. I can’t really help you there as this is what it’s going to be for now.
