You’re Stuck in Maintenance Mode

Your business is ticking along, but most of your energy is going into keeping it that way.

Clients still need looking after. Emails need answering. Programs need running. Admin needs doing. There’s always enough to fill the week.

The problem is, the work that could actually move the business forward keeps getting pushed back. You’ve probably got ideas. Maybe even good ones. But because the current business is still working, there’s no real pressure to make space for them.

So another week passes, then another month, and not much changes.

The Signs

You might notice things like:

  • You’ve had the same idea sitting in your todo list for months.
  • Most of your week goes towards existing clients and existing offers.
  • You keep meaning to work on something new once things quieten down.
  • Small admin jobs regularly win over bigger projects.
  • You’re productive, but not always on the things that matter most.
  • You keep tweaking what already exists instead of stepping back to work out what deserves your attention next.
  • You’ve been talking about the same changes for a while without doing much with them.
  • Nothing is badly wrong, which makes it easy to leave things as they are.

Reflection Questions

Here are 3 journaling questions to help with getting out of maintenance mode:

  1. What is the thought I have when I think about ‘going to the next level’ with my work?
  2. What are 3 things you’d love to stop doing in your business or work?
  3. Does being in ‘maintenance mode’ actually suit me well at this stage in life?

Next Steps

Don’t feel like it’s all doom and gloom. This is common problem that many small business owners face and it’s actually a sign that you’ve been doing a lot of things right.

Here are a couple of ways I can help you get unstuck:

  1. Starting tomorrow, I’ll send you a short 4 email series with some ideas for getting out of that pattern and giving the important stuff a real place in your week.
  2. If you’d like more direct help from me in working through this, you could try me on as your coach. This is the main way I help clients. I have a few spots available at the moment. If you’re interested, enquire here and we’ll catch up for a free chat.
